Suren Sambyal was born in the foothills of the Himalayan mountains in India. A passion for the arts led him to complete a degree in Applied Arts at the College of Arts, Chandigarh — a formative education that shaped both his visual sensibility and his deep respect for craft tradition.
He spent more than 40 years in India working across creative disciplines as both leader and practitioner — delivering local and international design projects in close collaboration with traditional craftsmen from across the subcontinent. During this period he developed extensive expertise in the carpet and floor-covering industry, combining indigenous knowledge with international technologies to create work of genuine distinction.
For the past 17 years, Sambyal has lived and worked in Sydney, where he continues to pursue concept-driven projects that draw on decades of accumulated knowledge. His practice remains rooted in the belief that meaningful design honours the legacy of the past while remaining alert to new materials, new methods, and new possibilities.
A collection of rugs inspired by the sophisticated interplay of light and shadow created by natural elements such as plants and flowers. Each design is the result of a combination of colour shades that accentuate the realism of every composition and create a three-dimensional effect, lending a distinctive depth to each design.
A collection shaped by five decades at the intersection of Indian craft and contemporary design thinking — rooted in the Himalayas, refined across two continents. Deliberate. Considered. Made to endure.
Suren Sambyal's debut collection with Habit draws on a lifetime of working alongside India's master craftsmen — now taking shape as a series of hand-knotted rugs that carry the weight of tradition and the clarity of a contemporary eye.
